Exercise 1

1. How much and how many

How much and how many are two question words that are used to ask about a quantity or a number of elements.
How many apples are on the table?
How much sugar do you want in the coffee?
Anuncios

2. When do we use how much?

How much is used with uncountable nouns.

How much milk is there in the fridge?
How much time do we have?

How much is also used to ask for the price of an item, as what we are really asking is How much money something costs, and money is an uncountable noun.

How much is this camera?
How much are the new Lordan trainers?

If the noun has already been mentioned, it can logically be omitted in the question.

- I want some cheese.
- How much (cheese) do you need?
Anuncios

3. When do we use how many?

How many is used with plural countable nouns.

How many students are there in the school?
How many pencils have you got?

If the noun has already been mentioned, it can be omitted.

- I've got a lot of books.
- How many ( books) have you got?
Anuncios

Remember!

How much and how many are used to ask about quantities.

COUNTABLE
How many legs do spiders have?
UNCOUNTABLE
How much water is there in the ocean?
How much is also used to ask for the price of something, that is, to know the amount of money an item costs.
