His face was dirty because he had been eating chocolate.

2. ¿Cómo se construye el past perfect continuous?

• La forma afirmativa

3. ¿Cómo se utiliza el past perfect continuous?

El past perfect continuous se utiliza para:

• Expresar una acción que empezó en un tiempo concreto del pasado y continuó hasta otro punto concreto del pasado o hasta que tuvo lugar otra acción.
  How long had he been rehearsing when he took a break?

  ¿Cuánto tiempo llevaba ensayando, cuando se tomó el descanso?

  En este ejemplo se quiere saber cuánto tiempo tuvo lugar la acción de ensayar antes de un punto concreto del pasado (cuando se tomó un descanso).

  She'd been working in the sales department for two years before she was promoted.

  Ella llevaba trabajando dos años en el departamento de ventas cuando fue ascendida.

  En este ejemplo, la acción de trabajar en el departamento de ventas continuó hasta que otra acción tuvo lugar (fue ascendida).
• Expresar una acción que es la causa de que otra acción tuviera lugar en el pasado.
  She was tired because she had been skiing.

  Estaba cansada porque había estado esquiando.

  I was sleepy because I'd been reading late.

  Tenía sueño porque había estado leyendo hasta tarde.

Hay que recordar que el past perfect continuous no se utilizará si el verbo principal es un state verb.
